New Work Established, Australia Council Grant. 2005/2006
Artist's Mother-in-law 2006 120 x 89.5 cm
Taking the pose directly from Whistler’s painting of his mother, by choosing a nude the artist adds a contemporary twist and celibrates the body of an elderly woman.
Awarded an Australian Council , New Work Established Grant in 2005 to forther develop her portrait skills, Manning experimented with the techniques and palette of Whistler and Freud to extend her work to a larger scale. Her preferance was still to work using untrained models, family, friends and strangers who caught her eye. Working quickly as in the ‘fast heads’, but over weeks and months from numerous sittings without the constraints of a one and a half hour time limit. The artist only worked directly from the model, scraping and wiping back any area she was disatisfied with at the sittings end to start afresh the next session.
